Workplace Literacy Program

Helping workers understand the workplace and maintain stable employment

The Workplace Literacy Program is an educational initiative of the Yukon Workers’ Action Centre designed to help workers understand the systems that shape employment in the Yukon. The program focuses on practical knowledge that helps people navigate the workplace with confidence and protect their income.

Many workers have strong job skills but may not be familiar with employment standards, workplace protections, or the processes available when problems arise. When these systems are unclear, small workplace issues can escalate and sometimes lead to unnecessary job loss or financial hardship.

The Workplace Literacy Program helps close this knowledge gap by providing clear, practical, and accessible learning opportunities for workers across the Yukon.

What is workplace literacy

Workplace literacy means understanding the rules, rights, and responsibilities that shape employment.

It includes practical knowledge such as:

  • Understanding basic employment standards
  • Reading and understanding employment agreements
  • Understanding pay rules, overtime, and leave entitlements
  • Recognizing workplace harassment and discrimination protections
  • Understanding workers compensation processes
  • Knowing how to address workplace concerns through existing systems

These skills help workers participate more confidently in the labour market and make informed decisions about their employment.

Why workplace literacy matters

Access to clear workplace information is an important part of financial security. Workers who understand how employment systems operate are better prepared to address workplace issues early and maintain stable employment.

When workers understand workplace expectations, protections, and available processes, they are more likely to resolve issues constructively and continue participating in the workforce.

The Workplace Literacy Program strengthens this knowledge and helps support income stability for workers and families in the Yukon.

Program activities

The program offers practical educational opportunities such as:

  • Workshops on employment standards and workplace rights
  • Training sessions on understanding employment agreements and workplace expectations
  • Information sessions on workers compensation and related systems
  • Guidance on addressing workplace concerns using existing processes
  • Accessible learning opportunities for workers who may face barriers to information

All sessions are designed using plain language so that participants can easily understand and apply what they learn.

Who the program serves

The Workplace Literacy Program is open to workers across the Yukon, particularly those who may face barriers accessing reliable workplace information, including:

  • Newcomers to the labour market
  • Low income workers
  • Racialized workers
  • Non unionized workers
  • Workers in temporary or precarious employment
  • Individuals unfamiliar with Yukon workplace systems

Our approach

The Yukon Workers’ Action Centre believes that clear information helps workers participate confidently in the workforce. The Workplace Literacy Program focuses on education, practical tools, and accessible information that help people better understand how workplaces operate.

By strengthening workplace knowledge, the program helps individuals maintain employment, protect their income, and contribute to a more resilient workforce in the Yukon.
