About Us

The Yukon Workers’ Action Centre was created in response to requests from people across the territory who identified the need for a community-based resource to help them understand workplace standards and access reliable information about their rights. In December 2022, workers and community members began discussing the need for a centre similar to worker support organizations that exist in other jurisdictions across Canada. These organizations help fill gaps for individuals who do not have union representation or easy access to legal information.

In Yukon, many workers face barriers when trying to understand workplace standards or navigate available systems. These barriers may include geographic distance, language differences, lack of familiarity with workplace laws, or limited access to legal guidance. These challenges are particularly common for Indigenous peoples, newcomers, young people entering the workforce, migrant workers, and individuals in precarious employment.

The centre was established to help address these gaps by providing education, workshops, outreach, and legal information navigation. Through these activities, the centre helps individuals better understand their rights in the workplace and their fundamental human rights and connects them with reliable information and support services.

By improving access to information and guidance, the centre contributes to a more informed workforce and supports fair and respectful workplaces across the Yukon.

Our Vision

A Yukon where all workers and individuals entering the workforce understand their workplace rights and human rights and can access reliable information and support to participate safely and fairly in the workplace.

Our Mission

To provide education, workshops, outreach, and legal information navigation that help workers and individuals entering the workforce across the Yukon understand workplace standards, their rights in the workplace, and their fundamental human rights, and connect them with reliable information and support services.

Our mandate

The centre works to improve access to information and guidance related to workplace standards and human rights across the Yukon. Its activities include educational workshops, community outreach, legal information navigation, and connecting individuals with appropriate services. The centre prioritizes reaching people who may face barriers to information or support, including Indigenous peoples, newcomers, young people, migrant workers, individuals in precarious employment, and residents of remote communities.

These three pieces work together logically:

Vision describes the long term change you want to see.
Mission explains what the centre does to move toward that vision.
Mandate describes the practical scope of the organization’s work.
